Yes. A pilot that lights and then drops out is usually a dirty pilot assembly, a weak thermocouple or a failing thermopile. The diagnostic visit is free; most of those fixes run $180 to $310 and are done in the same visit.
How much does a chimney cap replacement cost?
A stainless steel cap on a single flue runs $250 to $400 installed; multi-flue and custom caps run $350 to $600. We photograph the old cap and the crown underneath it, because a cracked crown is often the real reason water is getting in.
How often should a chimney be cleaned with Northwest Indiana winters?
NFPA 211 calls for an inspection every year and a sweep whenever creosote passes about an eighth of an inch. For most homes here that burn wood through a full Region winter, that means a sweep every fall, before the first cold snap off the lake.
